ABOUT THE MURAL #IAMFAMILIA Commemorative Mural A favorite subject of longtime owner and then unofficial female mayor of Segundo Barrio, Doña Yolanda Black-Navarro, “butterflies serve a purpose besides being beautiful, they act as shepherds to those passing onto the afterlife,” she once told the artist over a tequila at nearby El Tiempo. In the mural the Original Villa Arcos serves only “flour” tortillas. The masa is like the mortar to its community, tacos build bridges and unite cultures. The new mural continues a theme of mariposas and tacos de harina. In the mural, butterflies are depicted starting from top left Doña Velia Rodriguez Duran, mother to Yolanda Black Navarro pictured to the right of her. Continuing clockwise at the top, her son Christian Navarro is another cherubic figure fluttering above the arc of a flower tortilla. To the right of him we see the “Los Compadres” baseball team, based loosely of family members and friends. They would gather every Sunday and enjoy refreshments after games. Villa Arcos was a family spot then as it is now. To the right of them are two more butterfly cutouts, Gina Duran (la prima) who lived across the street from Villa Arcos once Christian re-opened after Yolanda’s passing. Another butterfly was added as a show of gratitude for a business partner of Villa Arcos. Jacob Torres, at the center of the mural, is flanked by his parents Joel (longtime restaurateur) and Gloria Torres (Yolanda’s sister). Many of the regulars share their experiences and what the place has meant so much for so many over the years. It is an oasis. Jacob as did his primo Christian understood the value art and culture have in preserving community traditions and wanted an art mural that grasped the role Villa Arcos serves in uniting families and friends as “compadres” and neighbors. They entrusted resident artist Ángel Quesada, who made many important murals in the neighborhood to create an auspicious work commemorating Four Generations of Food Culture in one of Houston’s most iconic spots. -- Ángel Quesada Visual Artist / Arts Consultant art saves lives! angelquesada.com (http://angelquesada.com/) IG: @artkungfu (http://instagram.com/artkungfu)
